Mmm Glühwein

You say it like `glewvine,' but the 'ew' is with the corners of your mouth a bit pulled back in a bit of a quarter smile, if that makes any sense.

Yeah, I can't do it either.

Whether or not you say it right doesn't change the power this hot spiced wine has to warm you up from the inside out on a cold winter day. It's hugely popular here, especially at the Christmas markets. These markets are full of vendors, food carts and bundled up people milling about so densely you can hardly walk at anything faster than a snail's pace. Every food cart sells glühwein and is surrounded by crowds of folks sipping from steaming mugs. As you can see below, my favorite carts were the ones dominated by smoking grills serving out pork steaks and bratwurst. I looked forward to the meat of the grill and glühwein each year.

While my focus was on the food, Amy was all about the shops. They had all sorts of them from wooden toys and kitchen utensils to knit and felted goods. We did our first round of Christmas shopping here, doing our best to play Santa with all sorts of stuff bought from the German Christmas Markets.
